Current Gallery: patrioticmilitaryart ( piece)
These prints are a tribute to the American spirit, and to the men and women of the military services. Triptychs--three images set together--are a classic art style which presents a series of images to portray a message without words. That was the starting point of the works. The captions and verse bring clarity and depth to the message of the images. THE IMAGES: The Civil War soldier on the left is a ubiquitous pose seen in many period images, conveying a stern resolve of purpose to defend the nation. The center image of Print I is the wreck of the U.S.S. Maine in Havana Harbor in 1898. The center image of Print II is the raising of the flag by Marines on Iwo Jima during WWII. The American flag is the focus of these images, the symbol of the unity of the nation. These two events occurred at the midpoint of U.S. history, at times when national peril and patriotism both ran high. The modern soldier on the right completes the visual message of a continuity of patriotism and resolve to defend the nation throughout American history and into the present. The eagle is both the most common symbol of America and a symbol of the idea that we can rise above the conflicts into a better time, looking into the future from a vantage point above the fray. THE CAPTIONS: ONE NATION was the essential point of the Civil War, the need for unity as a people in order to be a strong and free nation. It was a cause worth any sacrifice to uphold. REMEMBER is "Remember the Maine," the battle cry of the Spanish American War. "Remember" runs through American history as a rallying cry, from "Remember Bunker Hill" to "Remember the Alamo" to "Remember Pearl Harbor." Now "Remember" applies to the September 11th terrorist attacks, too, as part of American history. ALWAYS FAITHFUL is the meaning of Semper Fidelis, the motto of the U.S. Marine Corps. The Marines have always exemplified the absolute loyalty and integrity of the American military in defense of the nation. LET'S ROLL was a phrase spoken by one of the heroic people on the airliner which crashed in Pennsylvania as they began the fight to regain control of the aircraft from terrorists. It was picked up as a term of both dedication and retribution by American troops invading Iraq and Afghanistan, voicing the need for resolution in the face of adversity in order to be victorious. The combined ONE NATION--REMEMBER--ALWAYS FAITHFUL--LET'S ROLL and related images are intended to convey the idea that it is as a unified nation that we must confront foreign enemies and threats, and that by doing so we will always prevail. THE VERSE: The verse below the images is a slight paraphrase from Lincoln's Gettysburg Address to make it address the current sociopolitical situation and the need to persevere in order that those who have so far died in the struggle against terrorism not become wasted lives. The works are done in the style of an impressionist serigraph with a limited palette of two earth tone colors in order to present a timeless vision in which vivid color and detail do not distract the viewer from the theme. The stark simplicity of the prints reflects the stark reality of their message. The artist is a military veteran and historian.
